April 16, 2009 Charles Baird, Ph.D

Charles Baird, Ph.D., Emeritus Professor of Economics at CSU, East Bay will give us a talk on the abuse of language in American politics.

Much political discourse in America is complicated by the fact that people do not agree on the meaning of several terms. In any given discussion two people can mean different things by the same words. Thus they talk past each other rather than cooperatively with each other. Among the terms of confusion Dr. Baird will discuss are: liberal, conservative,  rights, freedom, equality, greed, self-interest, democracy, totalitarian, and authoritarian.

The problem is that in each case the meanings people use are not only different, they are contradictory. Along the way he will show that the issue of freedom of conscience of physicians in the abortion debate is one example of such semantic contradiction.

A Novena to Terri's Day

A message from Fr. Frank Pavone:

On Monday, March 23, Priests for Life will launch a prayer novena in remembrance of Terri Schiavo, the brain-injured woman who was killed in Florida in 2005 by being deprived of all food and water. We invite you to join this novena by going to priestsforlife.org and downloading the special prayer we have prepared. The prayer reminds us that life is always a good, even when beset by disability ,and that it is precisely in its vulnerability that life shows forth the glory of God.

The novena concludes on March 31, the date of Terri’s death, and a day that has been designated as the International Day of Remembrance of Terri Schiavo and all the Vulnerable. Please join our novena, at priestsforlife.org, and invite your parish, school, pro-life group and family to take part in it.

Economic Justice

Our speaker this morning outlined ten social precepts gleaned from the Catholic Church's documents on economic justice.  Below are the goals Ben listed:

1)     A just wage, which provides for the necessities of life, education for the children, savings for security in old age and hardship, and one which does not require that both parents be employed to supply for the family's needs;

2)     Unemployment benefits to provide for times of insecurity and hardship;

3)     Restraint in material consumption to enable us to assist the poor.  The Church also exhorts companies and the media to exercise restrain, and not to ...<< MORE >>

Executive from Siemens Medical Solutions provides a Catholic perspective on Just Pricing and Wages in a free market economy.

Have you ever experienced conflicts between your responsibilities to your business and your duties as a Catholic?

Do you sometimes wonder if the economically rational choice is the right choice?

Do our actions as leaders in business enhance or detract from the Church’s vision for a just society?

This presentation explores the relationship between faith and commerce in free market conditions, drawing upon Catholic social teaching as expressed in Pope Leo XIII’s encyclical, Rerum Novarum.

In preparation for next month's meeting with Ben Loop, you might want to read Pope Leo XIII's encyclical Rerum Novarum or "On Capital and Labor.
